Silverfish everywhere and bad food. That doesn't have to be the case.

We don't know where the good Google reviews come from. We spent 2 nights here with our children on the occasion of the game fair in Essen. At this point it should be mentioned that we have stayed in a few youth hostels in recent years and therefore have no illusions about the standard to be expected... Youth hostels are not a 5 star hotel. But we were definitely here for the last time and wouldn't recommend it.The bathroom wasn't clean and, above all, you could almost see the mold in the joints of the shower - we've never seen it so bad before - we would have saved ourselves the shower if it had been possible. The hostel doesn't have a bistro, which isn't a problem in itself. However, if when you call to check your arrival time it says: "There'll be someone in the bistro until 10" you somehow assume that there should be one. It's stupid if you've planned to have a little something to eat with the kids because you won't arrive until just before ten due to the traffic jam. As it turned out, the "bistro" was a room in the basement with a table tennis table and a completely empty snack machine. The lack of towels was also annoying - if they weren't provided, that's fine, but in that case, pointing this out in advance would have been helpful. And if not in advance, at least when we checked in there was a note that you could rent towels - especially if you arrived so late, of course by the time we discovered the towel problem there was no one left. The ceiling light constantly flickered and was unusable as a light source.A renovation is absolutely overdue. And when it comes to breakfast, it has to be said that it was far better in all the other youth hostels we've stayed in so far.We chose this youth hostel because of the good reviews - because it has better ones than the one directly in Essen and after this stay we can say with certainty: next time we will eat again...it was significantly better...

We were in the guest house. If you don't value anything, you can stay overnight here. Otherwise it wasn't very clean and definitely in need of renovation. Breakfast was simple and bland. For the price we endured it.

After a hike on the Neanderlandsteig, we were warmly welcomed by the JuHe team and had a large, nice room on the 4th floor in the guest house with a good view over the western Ruhr area. Very amazing despite the direct neighboring motorway, which was virtually inaudible due to the noise barriers. Very nice service also with regard to the good dinner and breakfast (both also possible gluten-free, which we gratefully took advantage of). We were very satisfied, a perfect location for us on the Neanderlandsteig - thanks again to the great JuHe team!
