staff was friendly. i didn't spend much time in the common spaces, only used it for sleeping at night, but i was very happy with it. seemingly safe neighbourhood, close to metro and bus, walking distance to for example notting hill, natural history museum, and the v&a. would recommend:) 18 year old girl travelling solo and i stayed in a female only room and felt very safe. :)

St James Backpackers is an oasis amongst hostels. It retains the soul of what a Back Packers Hostel should be about. It still has that community appeal. Friendly staff who take interest in the travellers and offer a warm welcome.  …

The bathrooms and showers give off some festival on day 3 vibes. Its unsanitary and gross. The matresses are better compareable to hammocks. …

The place really really needed a clean. The rooms/beds were dirty, the bathrooms nasty. |The breakfast was good (baked beans, eggs, toast, cereal), the people working there kind, the location good. However, no dinner as advertised.|Overall the place just seems unhygienic.

Disgusting, avoid this hostel.Probably worst hostel I’ve stayed in out of hundreds.Awful beds, felt like what I imagine a prison bed would feel like.Creaky old wire bunks with a 2 inch mattress.Wifi did not work anywhere in the hostel. Some outlets in our room or the hallway didn’t work. So had to charge stuff in the common area.Seems like there’s more people living here than actual travelers, the vibes are strange.Sketchy people arriving without luggage, just plastic bags. The room smelled so gross. It was full of junk, garbage and dirty clothes. Looked like a crash pad. People tweaking outside in the courtyard.Amenities are ok, hot water at least. There are far better hostels in London though. Unfortunately due to concerts everything was booked.
