Staying at this hostel, which is set in a former church, was definitely a unique experience. The kitchen is well-equipped, allowing you to cook your own meals and store food in the fridge, which is a great perk, especially for budget travelers. The price is also quite reasonable, making it a decent option for a short stay. However, the rooms do have some drawbacks. They can be quite chilly, even in the summer, so it's a good idea to bring a warm pyjama. The beds are way too small, not for adults, and you can’t sit up without hitting your head, which may be uncomfortable. The toilets are also quite small, which could be an issue if you're planning a longer stay. There’s no proper breakfast offered, so you’ll need to make your own arrangements in the morning. On the plus side, having a locker for your belongings is pretty good.Overall, this hostel offers an affordable stay, but it’s best suited for one or max. two nights rather than an extended visit.

A (close) friend and I shared a private room for fringe and were very comfortable! I get why folks complain about the dank and musty smell, but, come on now. You're in a 19th century church, what did you expect? The private room was clean and came with tea and coffee as well as a kettle, and had clean towels for us. It wasn't the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on, but it wasn't the worst either. Our downstairs room had a view into a courtyard and was perfectly quaint. It was certainly cozy but comfortable for 2 people who like each other. My only real issue was that they need more people working the front desk and I think that £3 a bag (£5 for big bags!) for storage for guests is a bit steep, which was particularly annoying when there was no one to help us get our bags when our car to the train station was arriving. I get that hostels charge you for everything, but it was a bit excessive. The common areas and bathrooms were clean and people were friendly. We were there for the fringe festival and booked far enough in advance that I don't feel like we got ripped off. I liked the location for our purposes, I think if we were in the city center it would have been too much for our vibe this time of year, but it was still walkable for us. It was a 25-35 min walk to all the venues/the castle/the train station (or a 10-15 min cab ride when we were on our way to and from the train) and it was pretty much all flat, and we had friends in town who couldn't say the same, so I felt pretty fortunate all things considered. I would definitely book again for fringe in the future and will be recommending it to my theater friends who don't mind a unique stay.

I always stay in hostels around this price range in the UK and this has been the best one by far, it's a beautiful building, fun interior. They staff are friendly and helpful (and quite when you are trying to sleep in) the rooms and facilities are clean and beds are comfortable. Feels safe and the area is in the beautiful West End, 1km away from public transport and shops, though it was a joy to walk here and back from the High Street and Castle.

Loved the unique re-use of a historic church! Very friendly staff and people. Kitchen open 24/7, pretty clean too! Our private room had a big beautiful window and high ceilings, and the bed was comfy. In a quieter neighborhood (which was a relief after coming from London and bustling Old Town) right by the beautiful Dean Village! Would definitely recommend.

Two things need to be remembered - its a very old building, and its a budget hostel. Knowing that, I was pleasantly surprised at my stay. Private room with an old-fashioned key made the history of the place that little bit more real. …

The staff here is really great, very friendly and warm! It's as well a special place as it is in a converted church with dormitories and everything build inside. The bed rooms are a bit small and you easily hear noise from other rooms, but alright for me just for sleeping there and with earplugs. The common areas are nice and friendly. Cleanliness and everything was alright for me. Thanks a lot for the warm welcome and for your great support in every regard! I liked the locations as it is really close to the Leith river where I had a beautiful walk on the first morning and as well not too far away from many other places where you can easily walk to.

Decent for a hostel. We had a private room, clean and the bathroom and toilet facilities seemed to be regularly cleaned etc.|One of the better hostels I've ever been in.|We were able to easily walk to many attractions and all over the city from here, so that was great too!

Having backpacked Europe for 7 months, this is the most cramped dorm I stayed in anywhere. The rooms also have no window or other form of ventilation, so they smell quite bad.The bathrooms are a bit yuck with overflowing bins and tiny basins, but overall that’s what you’d expect from the cheapest hostel in the city so can’t complain too much.

This hostel has a unique vibe, being an 1800's church conversion. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It has a spacious communal area in the basement with a well equipped kitchen. It's located just a couple of minutes(5-10) walk from the city centre. Ideal accomodation for any backpackers on a trip to Edinburgh at reasonable prices. Highly recommended! 👍
