Stopped for impromptu Saturday lunch.First time here and delighted with everything on offer. Calm and relaxed atmosphere. Lots of attentive staff who were friendly and seemed to have good camaraderie between themselves.Special mention for the tarts and desserts. Most excellent pastry chef, Hamish McCrae, who came out to greet us when we asked about the tarts…Such a wonderful surprise and such excellent food. We spent a joyous couple of hours over lunch.

We stayed a night and had dinner and breakfast. Good things - the building has been done up very nicely; the staff in the restaurant were great; the food was decent - both dinner and breakfast were cooked and presented to a good standard; the room was tastefully designed and the bed was really comfortable.Negatives unfortunately take the edge off things: underlying albeit relatively quiet but audible bass from music in the kitchen or bar area until 11pm and then again from 7am. A compressor for an AC or refrigeration unit was sited right outside the bedroom window which kicked in every 10 minutes or so.You could kind of overlook all this (it's billed as a "Pub restaurant with rooms") but we had a gift voucher for a 'package' deal which is actually exorbitantly expensive - the room worked out at £300 which is ridiculous for what was offered.Reception staff seemed under-trained. When we booked there was great confusion. The lady seemed to think we were buying rather than using a voucher. She was able to sell vouchers but didn't know how we could use them. Slightly similar mild confusion on check-in, and again during check-out about how we might keep any remaining balance on the voucher. The staff were very pleasant at all times, but when you're being charged £300 for a room you kind of expect perfection at all levels.

recently visited the pub and went to town on their menu. everything sounded so delicious that it took all I had not to order it all lol. they're also dog-friendly, so that is a huge plus! the only downside is that their pub prices are pretty high for what they offer - tragic, but increasingly common for today's f&b scene. but is the food tasty enough for a satisfying stopover during a road trip in Scotland? definitely.parking is just outside and limited.

Just returned from a golf vacation in the East Lothian area. I rarely write reviews but felt I needed to share how fantastic this hotel was. For a golfer, it is centrally located to perfection. We played 10 courses in 6 days and the furthest we drove was about 20 minutes, even walking to a couple of courses. The service was exceptional, the food was great, and the rooms were exactly what we needed. IDEAL hotel for golfers. I will be staying here for any and all future trips to East Lothian.

Had reservations for party of 8 and were quickly ushered from bar area to back patio where no one was sitting. Had a drink then called to table for dinner. Our waiter was the manager I think- he was not dressed like other servers. While ordering dinner a member of our party asked if a particular item was good which was met with a snarky “if it wasn’t good it wouldn’t be on the menu”…Food was just ok and over priced. What ruined the night for us was the complete lack of service. We had to get up multiple times over a 2 hour dinner for various things, drinks, napkins, etc as no one would check on us. The place was half full and we were trying to enjoy ourselves (lots of drinks) but could not get anyone to look our way. I finally had to get up to request our bill as it had been 30 minutes after everyone was done with dinner without anyone coming by.I glanced at the bill and saw a total which included (in ALL CAPS) an optional tip.I handed the manager my credit card expecting to be given the OPTION to add gratuity only to see it had been ran for the full amount which included the optional gratuity…At that point I decided to not make a fuss as we were just ready to leave. It was our most disappointing (and expensive)meal over 2 weeks in Scotland.Beautiful place and d food was ok but service was a solid 1!
